In December 2016 through to February 2017 we featured the paintings of Jasper Schmidt. For the Thunder Bay artist, this is Jasper's first gallery showing and we are proud to showcase her pieces to the community. Jasper's warm, earthy paintings explore themes of transition, journey and self-discovery. The work combines abstraction and cartography, and fill the space with a glowing atmosphere.
ARTIST'S BIO: Jasper Schmidt Jasper Schmidt is currently working on finishing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Lakehead University. She grew up 40 km Southwest of Thunder Bay in a community called South Gillies. Jasper was always artistic and learned her love of painting in a high school art class. While attending Lakehead, she learned about other forms of art, such as printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. During her third year of university, she started exploring maps. Each map in this series depicts a significant place in Jasper’s life, whether it be a place she has lived or a place she has spent a lot of time in. Jasper enjoys exploring the differences between raw and primed canvas and tries to showcase this relationship in her work.
